Myocardial O2 consumption was determined by direct Fick method in the dog heart-lung preparation modified according to Rodbard''s technique to measure the total coronary flow. O2 content of arterial and coronary mixed venous blood in pulmonary artery was determined by Van Slyke manometric apparatus. In 10 experiments subjected to hypothermia during which cardiac work was kept constant at about 0.50 kg-M./minute, myocardial O2 uptake declined exponentially between 36 and 26 C, with a QlO of 1.83. Under these conditions coronary flow remained unchanged, A-V O2 difference dropped and O2 uptake diminished when temperature reached 26 C. Mechanical efficiency increased from 4.7 to 8.9%. Upon rewarming (4 experiments), myocardial O2 uptake and mechanical efficiency returned to precooling values. It is concluded that hypothermia does not interfere with the utilization of aerobic energy by heart muscle.
