The article discusses a study that examined the expression of the asparaginyl endopeptidase legumain in demyelinating lesions of chronic progressive multiple sclerosis, active necrotic lesions of neuromyelitis optica and acute necrotic lesions of cerebral infarction. The expression of legumain on macrophages was determined through immunochemistry. Results show the role of legumain in extracellular matrix remodeling by proteolytic processing of fibronectin and matrix metallopeptidase 2.
