THE most revolutionary development in biology in recent years has been the advent of genetic engineering or, more precisely, recombinant DNA technology. It will have its most immediate and profound effects in medical genetics and in the prevention of genetic disease, but in the long term medicine. in general and animal and plant breeding will benefit. Genetic engineering has been the subject of public debate because of fears about the possible biohazards of the technology. Unfortunately the language used in many of the reports of recent developments in this field is highly technical and not easily understood by the non-expert. Here I, as a non-expert myself, will attempt to outline in simple (though I hope precise) terms some of the basic features of the technology and to discuss a few of its applications.
