When properly used and disposed of, creosote does not appear to signifi-cantly threaten human health. How-ever, misuse, accidental spillage, and improper disposal of creosote results in contaminated environmentswith seri-ous potential health risks. Bioremediation, the use of pollutant-degrading microorganisms to ameliorate con-taminated materials, represents one means by which these sites may be re-stored to their original condition.Environmental contamination Creosote contamination is generally associated with surface soils, waters in treatment lagoons or evaporation areas, and groundwater contaminated with leachate from the above sources. Collectively, active wood treatment facili-ties generate an estimated 840 to 1530 dry metric tons annually (2) of hazardous-waste sludge classified as K001 (49
