Several studies have revealed the conceptual association between gender and hue, with the typical association of blue with men and red/pink with women through social experience. Studies have demonstrated that gender is also associated with another visual characteristic, that is, brightness, based on the sexual dimorphism of skin pigmentation, whereby men and women relate to darker and lighter colors, respectively. The present study examined which visual property is closely related to the concept of gender in Japanese participants. Experiment 1 confirmed that Japanese adults formed conceptual associations between gender, hue, and brightness, similar to Western cultures. Experiment 2 investigated the effects of the two visual properties simultaneously by adopting stimuli that combined hue and brightness and revealed an interaction between the same, which demonstrated that a lighter red color (pink) is closely associated with the concept of gender. These results suggest that although there might be an association between gender and brightness acquired through knowledge based on the sexual dimorphism of skin pigmentation, the association between gender and the specific color acquired through social experience is more intimate.
