Opinions about the feasibility of using the Grameen Bank as a model for institutional development differ markedly. For analytical purposes, these opinions are categorized as falling into one of four possible propositions and the validity of the contrasting propositions is examined. The first section briefly describes the methods and achievement of the Bank to outline its main features and to substantiate claims that it has been successful. Following this, three recent attempts to use the Grameen Bank as an institutional model are compared: the SAVECRED scheme, an action-research project attempting to establish a credit programme for the poor in Sri Lanka; the Malawi Mudzi Fund (MMF) which provides credit to landless and near landless and is a pilot project to test the possibility of replicating the Grameen Bank in other countries; and Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM), an action-research project providing loans to alleviate poverty in northwestern Selangor. It is concluded that it is too early to make any firm pronouncement on the degree of success achieved by these three attempts to replicate the Grameen Bank. However, both the AIM and SAVECRED schemes provide indications that the Grameen Bank may be transferable.
