The trail pheromone ofTetramorium caespitum(L.) was studied in the laboratory using gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry. The mass spectrum of the peak with the lower retention time was identical to that of 2,5-dimethylpyrazine, while that with the higher retention time was identified as 3-ethyl-2,5-dimethylpyrazine. The average total amount of the 2 pyrazines present in the poison vesicle of 10 workers was quantified and found to be equivalent to 3.9 ng/ant, of which 2,5-dimethylpyrazine accounted for around 70% and 3-ethyl-2,5-dimethylpyrazine for around 30%, and a 70:30 mixture of these compounds showed the highest activity and did not differ significantly in activity when compared with a trail made of a single poison vesicle.
