The arts play an important role in healing and rebuilding social relations in communities affected by conflict. Music, dance, drama, painting, and drawing, among others, are indispensable tools for fostering reconciliation, especially during and after war. Using the case of Sierra Leone and drawing upon the works of Peacelinks—an amateur group of youth perfo rmers who utilized the arts as a creative tool of peacebuilding and social mobilization—the briefing contextualizes and analyzes the meanings and peacebuilding values of the arts in armed conflict. It demonstrates that culturally grounded artistic performances can act both as a cathartic tool and as a driver of positive change for young people with firsthand experiences of the horrors of contemporary conflicts in countries such as Sierra Leone.
