Olefin metathesis has found widespread application in smallmolecule synthesis.[1] Its use can be subclassified into three transformations [1a]—ring-opening metathesis, ring-closing metathesis, and cross-metathesis—and one can readily envision an asymmetric variant of each of these reactions (Scheme 1). We report herein the use of highly active chiral ruthenium catalysts for asymmetric ring-opening cross-metathesis (AROCM) and the first example of an asymmetric cross-metathesis (ACM) reaction.Chiral molybdenum catalysts have been developed for asymmetric ring-closing metathesis(ARCM) and AROCM.[2–4] These catalysts lack extensive tolerance of functional groups and require rigorous exclusion of air and moisture.
