SUMMARY The social relations and colony cycle of 10 pre-emergence and eight post-emergence colonies of Ropalidia (Icariola) variegata jacobsoni (Buysson) (Hymenoptera Vespidae) were observed in Sumatera Barat (humid tropics) from June 26 to September 2, 1983. Observations (a total of 250 hr) revealed the following facts: i. Colonies were founded at any time by single or multiple (2–4) foundresses. ii. Dominance interactions between females were very weak and mostly non-tactile. The number of dominance acts was 0.59/female/hr in a 2-female colony (M-9) and 1.23/female/hr just after the emergence of a daughter in the same colony. In a mature colony (M-3) with 20 females, the frequency of dominance was 2.05 acts/female/hr and those of the topdominant occupied 44% of the total, indicating the presence of a dominance hierarchy even in this stage. iii. Task allocation was observed between females. The most decisive difference between the top-dominant and the remainder was that the former never foraged for anima...
