Chapter 10 of the 1998 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) report presents data on the prevalence rate of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). HIV prevalence rate was lower in rural areas (8-9%) than in urban areas (12-13%). About 75% of all AIDS cases occurred among people 20-45 years of age. Men were found to have a higher average number of sexual partners than women. The number of partners was inversely proportional to age for married people and directly proportional with age for unmarried people. The most common source of information for both men and women was the radio. Data are given for other STDs including syphilis gonorrhea and genital warts. Among women the commonly reported measure to avoid STD transmission was medicine (30%) followed by avoidance of sex (11%) and use of condoms (5%); mens most common preventive measure was avoidance of sex (46%) followed by medicine (38%) and use of condoms (10%).
