In a letter dated 15–20 November 1840 sent to Christian Kapp, a professor of philosophy at the University of Heidelberg, Ludwig Feuerbach tried to lift the spirits of his close and, on this occasion, ailing friend. In his opening lines he commented–jokingly, but only half so–that ‘Epicureanism is also the truth’:At least there are cases where it is necessary, as in yours. May your highest moral principle be physical selfpreservation. Commendable, good, and noble–whatever is healthy; bad, poorly-reputed–whatever is harmful to you. Reading is always harmful. So put the books away for a start. 1
