In CAID (Computer Aided Industrial Design) parametric surfaces are widely used. A surface is often generated by a skinning method because the generated surfaces are easy to manipulate. A typical skinning method generates a surface with two section curves and a driving curve. In this paper we first propose an algorithm to apply such a skinning method to a Catmull-Clark subdivision surface. A new method, which generates a C2 surface interpolating the given section curves, is devised based on a unified subdivision scheme. Furthermore, a new skinning effect called “a vanishing feature” is introduced. The vanishing feature is a feature which gradually disappears from one of the section curve to the other, and finally vanishes at some point on the surface. A method to embed a vanishing feature to a skinned subdivision surface is developed by reconfiguring the control mesh according to the intersection points between the control mesh and the vanishing feature. Those two methods are implemented as a prototype system and some examples are demonstrated.
