Amino acid sequences of AMA-1 (apical membrane antigen-1) from 5Plasmodium falciparumisolates were determined and compared with those already known from 6 other isolates. 10 of the 11 sequences were shown to be distinct, indicating that the total repertoire of circulating AMA-1 alleles is probably very large.
