Research studies involving student attitudes toward science and scientists have shown that, in addition to the pervasive social and curricular perspective, a major factor in attitude formation and/or change is the classroom learning environment. Girls are especially sensitive to stereotypic environments which perpetuate science as being a male domain. This paper discusses the results of one of the instruments, Draw-A-Scientist Test (DAST), used to determine the effec-tiveness of a teacher intervention program designed to help teachers promote a stimulating gender-free learn-ing environment. The DAST was shown to be a vehicle for sensitizing both teachers and students to the need for changing the image of science and scientists.
