'~"~ In order to offer such a service to our local community and also to create a prototype program that is readily adaptable to use in other cities, the Department of Radiology at the University of California, San Francisco has developed a financially solvent screening program whose aim is to provide high-quality mammography at the lowest possible price to the patient. This paper describes in detail the specific features permitting low cost operation of our screening program.
