The most interesting features in the pericardlal cells of the adult aphid M. persicae, which are ovoid units lying in a chain along the heart, is a striking specialization in the cortical region as shown by electron microscopy. Large numbers of surface imaginations occur along the channels formed by numerous surface folds, and are characterized by a structured layer or "coat" in their cytoplasmic sides, about 20 m[mu] thick and of alveolate appearance. Vesicles close to the cell surface, about 110 m[mu] in diameter, possess identical coats and are supposed to be derived from the imaginations. Structures are described.
