A Not quite. The main characteristic of the present situation is that of strong and rising demand pressures pushing against existing capacity. This capacity cannot be increased rapidly enough to satisfy all the demands of the economy. As a result, competition for all resources-and particularly for labor-has pushed up wages and some other costs more rapidly than productivity. Since the war, only about two-thirds of the increase in manufacturing unit labor costs has been absorbed by increased productivity. Indeed, one of the main economic problems facing us today is the need to control such cost increases. If we do not, we are going to have a situation where unit costs will rise continuously. And that would mean a continuous inflation.
