I am very pleased to have the opportunity as President of the Infectious Diseases Society of America of addressing this distinguished assembly of investigators from this country and abroad. Like us who are the members of a new and small society, all of you are concerned from one point of view or another with the control and therapy of disease caused by microorganisms. Because of these mutual interests, the Infectious Diseases Society has greatly profited from the close association which its founders happily established with the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy. On behalf of your colleagues in the Infectious Diseases Society, I give you warm greetings and express their hope that the ties between us will in the future remain strong. To the members of the International Congress of Chemotherapy and in particular to those from abroad, our Society extends its most cordial welcome. Our country desires as many friends in other lands as it can get and hold. It is perhaps through gatherings of scientists and scholars such as this that our wishes can be best fulfilled. When Dr. Savage many months ago invited me to bring you these messages from our Society, he also asked me to speak for a few minutes on a topic of my own choosing. To me, at that time, this present hour seemed far away. There would, I thought, be ample opportunity to fashion leisurely a well-rounded discourse, and so I suggested the subject that is printed in the program:" Remarks on the Control of Virus Infections in the Future."
