A daily cycle of heat resistance in plants which does not appear to have been reported in the literature has been observed in species of field crops including corn (maize), wheat, barley, sorghum and alfalfa. Daily maximum resistance to heat was attained at about mid-day and continued during the afternoon. Minimum resistance occurred early in the morning. Resistance increased with exposure to light and decreased in the absence of it. One hour of light following normal night darkness produced a measurable resistance, and the daily maximum was generally reached within four hours after exposure to daylight. Plants exposed to electric light during the night had a greater resistance to heat in the early morning than those in darkness all night. The loss of resistance when exposed to darkness was slower than the gain in the presence of light. Possible explanations are suggested and are receiving further study.-R.O.W.
