METHODS Experiments were performed, except when otherwise stated, on 55 male Wistar rats, weighing 200-310 g, supplied by Hilltop Laboratory Animals, Scottsdale, Penna. The animals were fasted overnight and anesthetized with intraperitoneal sodium pentobarbital, 50 mg/kg body wt. During the experiment, small intermittent, intravenous doses of the anesthetic were given as needed. A jugular vein was used for the intravenous infusions and a carotid artery was used for blood sampling and, in some instances, for blood pressure measurements with a P23Db Statham pressure transducer (Statham Instruments, Oxnard, Calif.) connected to a Beckman dynograph recorder (Beckman Instruments, Fullerton, Calif.) The animals were placed on a heated animal table and the body temperature was maintained constant at 37OC. The abdominal cavity was opened and the left kidney was prepared for micropuncture as previously described (12). The peritoneal reflection covering the kidney and the perirenal fat were left intact. Urine was collected from both ureters with the use of a PE-10 or PE-50 polyethylene catheter (Clay Adams, Parsippany, NJ), depending on the diuretic condition of the animals. Only those animals having a late proximal
