The bacteriorhodopsin branched-photocycle intermediates P and Q are studied with respect to chromophore isomeric content, photochemical origin, kinetic heterogeneity, and photoreversibility. These blue-shifted species are compared to products with similar spectroscopic properties generated via thermal denaturation.
