Present theories of eruption are reviewed and the theory that relates eruption to the vascularity of the periapical tissue is favoured. The following evidence is given in favor of the theory. 1. Submerged teeth tend to erupt where the surrounding tissues are caused to increase their vascularity. Under a denture they will erupt when the tissue is irritated sufficiently to cause hyperaemia. They will also erupt when rubbed with finger to cause hyperaemia. Inflammation of the periapical tissue causes eruption of a tooth. 2. In animals the destruction of the sympathetic innervation on one side of the jaw causing permanent vaso-dilation increased rate of eruption. 3. Hormones influenced the vascularity of the tissues surrounding the teeth. As the evidence is not conclusive more experiments should be made. The eruptive force is probably not derived simply from one source but may be the result of many factors. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: G. E. Groth
