During the first thirteen years or so of his scientific career, H. Weyl was concerned mostly with analysis, function theory, differential geometry and relativity theory. His interest in representations of Lie groups or Lie algebras 1 and Invariant Theory grew out of problems raised by the mathematical underpinning of relativity theory.
