Electrospray mass spectrometric data for acidic gallium trihalide solutions, GaX3 (X = Cl or Br), reveal the unipositive ions [GaX2](+), [GaX(OH)](+) and [Ga(OH)(2)](+) often associated with molecules of H2O or MeCN from the solvent phase. GaI3 solutions yield mainly the solvated [Ga(OH)(2)](+) ion. Solutions of InX3 produce the [InX2](+) cations in association with solvent molecules; the predominant hydrolysed cation is solvated [InO](+). Under negative ion conditions, solutions of GaX3 + HX (X = Cl, Br or I) give rise to [GaX4](-) and [GaX3(OH)](-), along with Ga-2 and Ga-3 species, particularly [(GaX3)(2)(OH)](-). Solutions of InX3 + HX show [InX4](-) and [In2X7](-). ES-MS data are also reported for mixed halide solutions of gallium, and for solutions of GaCl3 containing the additional ligands F-, NO3- or NCS-. Complex cations [InI2(18-crown-6)](+) and [InI(OH)(18-crown-6)](+) were detected by ES-MS on adding this crown ether to aqueous InI3 solution. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
