SC Draine and AG Greenwald (1998) demonstrated replicable unconscioussemantic priming by combining a response windowprocedure, which increases priming effects by requiring rapidresponding, and a regression analysis in whichthe regression intercept is a marker for unconscious cognition. Thecommentaries by BA Dosher (1998) and by PM Merikle and EM Reingold (1998) raise two questionsabout conclusions based on these methods:(a) Did Draine and Greenwald (1998) demonstrate anindirect effect (subliminal priming) in the absence of a directeffect (ie, visibility of the subliminal priming words)? and (b) Did Draine and Greenwald (1998) demonstrate dissociation of conscious fromunconscious cognition? The first question has reassuring responsesthat are reviewed here. The second question is answered by pointingout that although Draine and Greenwald (1998) did not claim to have established suchdissociation, they provided data that advance the plausibility ofthat conclusion.
