A survey of the leaves of 116 spp. of the neotropical genus Cavendishia shows that the genus is characterized by the presence of flavone C-glycosides. Other constituents include flavones (luteolin, chrysoeriol and tricin), flavonols (quercetin, kaempferol and myricetin), dihydroflavonols, proanthocyanidins, and ellagic or salicylic acids. The stilbene, resveratrol, is identified in 6 spp., this is only the 2nd report of stilbenoids in the family. The identity of a natural hybrid C. endresii .times. C. quereme is confirmed by detecting in its leaves characteristic phenolics of both parental species.
