Microfilariae of Onchocerca volvulus from forest areas of Cameroon developed well in Simulium damnosum from the forest and Guinea-savanna zones of many parts of West Africa, but they showed little or no development in S. damnosum populations from sites in Sudan-savanna zones. Conversely, microfilariae of O. volvulus from the Sudan-savanna area of Cameroon developed well in S. damnosum from Sudan-savanna zones, but showed little or no development in flies from Guinea-savanna and forest zones. There are, in West Africa, 2 strains of O. volvulus and 2 main physiological forms of S. damnosum. with some minor variations, and that these are coupled to form 2, largely distinct, parasite-vector complexes, one extending over the forest and Guinea-savanna zones, and the other confined to the Sudan-savanna zones. The implications of these findings are discussed with particular reference to the clinical pattern of human onchocerciasls in the different zones, and the 2 strains of O. volvulus may be found to differ in pathogenicity, in length of life in the human host, and in susceptibility to chemotherapeutic agents.
