In the conclusion of this book, Fell reflects on the recent centenary events commemorating the end of the First World War, noting that male soldiers who lost their lives during the conflict have dominated commemorative events since the end of the war in 1918. The ‘blood tax’was, and still is, understood as ‘the ultimate measure of war service and individual sacrifice’(p. 194).
