Michael Bernard-Donals and Richard Glejzer’s Between Witness and Testimony (2001) and Lawrence Douglas’ The Memory of Judgment (2001)), but that is a minor quibble on a personal level. The strength of Haunted Images lies not only in what it shows but also in the areas it opens up for subsequent analysis. (There is, for example, a discussion to be had on trauma and ethics, which includes the recent work of Ruth Leys.) The introductions and conclusions to each chapter are informative and lucid, and overall Saxton has produced a book that is both a departure in the study of Holocaust film, and a useful summary of a wide number of debates. This is a book that will be a valuable text for both students and scholars.
