Voltammetric deposition and stripping of selenium (IV) at a rotating gold-disk electrode in 0.1 M perchloric acid hydroxyl radical are 3.3 X 10®, 3.0 X 109, and 2.1 X 106, re-spectively. Thus a diffusing OH· should be consumed en-tirely by benzene or toluene when generated in mixtures of those hydrocarbons with acetonitrile. We have accordingly searched for the formation of the coupling products biphenyl and bibenzyl in exhaustive electrolysis of BU4NOH in mixed solvents of benzene/acetonitrile (40/60)(v/v) and toluene/acetonitrile (40/60)(v/v). In electrolyses conducted at+ 1.1 and+ 1.7 V, no coupling products were observed by thin layer chromatography. In these electrolyses, as well as those preceding (no trap-ping substrate), we observed a darkening (brown colora-tion) of the reaction mixture during the electrolysis. While the negative product findings in this investigation are somewhat unsatisfying, a partial interpretation of the anodic hydroxide oxidation in acetonitrile is possible, and follows.
