The design of structures concerns the inter-relation of the distributions in space of three parameters, namely the applied loading, the local density of material and the stress in that material. From the time of Bernoulli and Euler the normal practice has been to take assigned values of the first, to hazard guesses as to the second and then to compute the third: and in this manner of approach development over the years has been little more than improvement in methods of iteration to adjust the guesses in the second step. Ideally it would be far more logical to postulate the distribution of stress and hence to compute the proper distribution of material. Unluckily this manner of approach is hedged about by formidable difficulties. That is what this book is all about, and it does indeed comprise virtually all that is at present known in this field.
