4 The market product I think NPL suited me because it provided well for urges which began to well up some while before Cambridge (except the urge not to wait for permission before acting!). Although as a Christian I believe my school motto Ex spinis uvas can apply to personal relationships at any moment in life, it was intended, when adopted in 1909, to apply to schooldays. Cambridge I would say, or hope, ripened the urae with the maturity, sense of responsibility and training in logical thought which a professional career in physics demands. A conceited autobiography? Right; but at 68 the good fortune of my early days is clearer to me than it ever was. A physicist, above all men, is one who observes, synthesizes and injects new knowledge into society, capable of generating loss or gain, social strife or amity, war or peace, disaster or survival. Factual knowledge, manual skill and mental brilliance are fine, but can only come to fruition in this context if accompanied by ready acceptance of personal and corporate responsibility which can hardly be discharged within an ivory tower. As physicists, in this age, we have a golden opportunity to exemplify this. If we were to do so fully, perhaps our arguments about if, when, where and why to do physics would sit more comfortably upon us. And let us not forget that physics, like everything else in life, begins in the cradle.
