A four-year study of animals affected with laminitis, and an equal number of control animals, showed that affected animals were predisposed to lesions in the solar horn, particularly in the lamellar region. Horn quality was poorer in the affected group. Biochemical analyses revealed a higher moisture content in affected hooves and a considerable reduction in sulphur-containing amino acids and lysine. The reasons for these changes, and their likely implications in hoof lameness in general, are discussed.
