The so-called spinal trigeminal nucleus can be subdivided on the basis of its cytoarchitectonic structure into 3 parts[long dash]n. caudalis, n. interpolaris, and n. oralis. Only the n. caudalis has the same fundamental cell arrangement as the head of the posterior horn of the spinal cord; the n. interpolaris and oralis showing quite different structures. According to these anatomical findings, we may consider that only the n. caudalis is concerned with the conduction of pain and temp. from the face. The connections and functions of the 2 other n. are for the time being unknown. These results explain why the operation of tractotomy is effective, even when the section is made as far caudal as at the level of the obex. It is suggested that the term spinal trigeminal n. should be avoided and, in- stead, one should speak of the spinal trigeminal complex, which is composed of 3 nuclei: caudalis, interpolaris, and oralis. The spinal trigeminal complex shows the same general features and the same subdivisions in both man and monkey.
