The distribution and external characteristics of 5 groups of extant wild goats are described. These are the turs, ibexes, pasangs or bezoars, markhors and tahrs which are found mainly in the mountainous areas of Eurasia and also in Ethiopia, Southern Arabia and Southern India. There are no true wild goats in the new world. Domestic goats are considered in the geographical groupings, Alpine, Balkan, Syrian, Nubian, West and Central Asian, South and East Asian, and described briefly from the standpoint of external appearance and usage. Dwarf goats are treated for convenience as a breed group. On the basis of comparative morphology and evidence of successful interbreeding of various species ofCaprathe wild bezoar of S.E. Asia is regarded as the progenitor of the majority of domestic goats. The markhor may have entered into the development of some Indian breeds and the ibex into Nubian breeds, probably by crossing with already domesticated bezoar stock. It is suggested that the main centre of domestication of the wild goat lay in the eastern part of the S.W. Asian uplands, on the grounds that the greatest number and variety of primitive breeds occur to-day in the Indus lowlands and the mountains to the west.
