Significant progress has been made in the study of mammalian pineal physiology during the past few years. Much of this progress has resulted from the accumulation of evidence that pineal melatonin is a hormonal agent which is involved in regulating annual reproductive cycles in some mammals. In this regard the Syrian (golden) hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) has been the most extensively studied species, and the present review will be focused upon the findings in this animal along with recent data from two additional hamster species–the Turkish hamster (Mesocricetus brandti) and the Siberian (Djungarian) hamster (Phodopus sungorus). It is not the authors' intent to provide a summary of all lines of work related to the physiology of pineal melatonin in animals. Rather, certain aspects of recent research have been selected for discussion with an emphasis on re-evaluating earlier hypotheses which were designed to explain pineal function.
