Twenty-four immature female rats received daily electrical stimulation of the temporal lobes or hypo-thalamus through chronically Implanted electrodes. Eleven rats had electrodes Implanted but received no electric current. Age at vaginal opening of each experimental rat was compared with that of a nonoperated littermate control. Significant (P < 0.05) delay in vaginal opening was observed only in the nine rats stimulated in the cortlcomedlcal division of the amygdaloid complex and in one rat with an electrode implanted in the cortical amygdaloid nucleus which received no electrical stimulation. Stimulation of the hippocampal formation or hypo-thalamus were without effect. The Interval between vaginal opening and ovulation and the number of ova shed were not affected by stimulation. These results support the hypothesis that the corticomedlal amygdala exerts an inhibitory Influence on the onset of puberty in the female rat.
