ends up resorting to the familiar categories of primitive accumulation and traditional/ advanced capitalism – but, ironically, in ways that are ambiguous, if not also inconsistent. As a result, primitive accumulation is used as a descriptive term to label various forms of expulsion, without making pertinent distinctions among them. Consequently, analytically distinct processes of primitive and capitalist accumulation, as well as instances in which there is no accumulation, are bracketed together under the broad rubric of expulsion. The approach and methods followed by Sassen have thus not served to bring out the theoretical insights on ‘expulsions’ that could have been potentially gleaned from this ambitious work. Nonetheless, her vision of a world beset with expulsions in multiple dimensions, some of which may be interconnected by deep causal structures, embodies an idea that could be more coherently theorized in future works.
