A distributed hydrological model for simulation of the rainfall-runoff process in the Mosel River catchment is under development. The research project has several objectives: development of a hydrological model allowing short-term and long-term simulation and application for real time flood forecasting, specification of the impact of landuse changes and identification of the hydrological effects of potential climatic changes. The model is structured in a modular way; for every component of the water balance certain modules are defined and combined into a main computer program. It is based on a geographic information system derived from a digital terrain model, on Landsat satellite imagery and on digitized maps, all having a spatial resolution of 30x30 m. In order to achieve a reduction in computational effort grid elements having equal hydrological characteristics are lumped together into 'hydrologically similar units'.
