Several investigators (1, 2, 4, 5, 6) have shown that the application of small amounts of electric current to bone stimulates the formation of new bone (osteogenesis). They disagree however on what kind of electric current (DC, AC, or pulsed) yields best performance. To provide an answer to this question the electric impedance of bone has been measured by the fourpoint probe technique, which is widely used in semiconductor technology. In this way an equivalent electric circuit for the bone and the electrodes has been obtained.
