During embryonic development, the midgut needs to undergo extensive elongation to form the small intestine. In this issue ofDevelopment Cell, Wang et. al. (2018) explore the cell dynamics of this tissue and find that regulated re-integration of cells into the epithelial layer is important for elongation.
