Several manufacturers have developed sensitive and specific assays to detect drugs of abuse at the point of care. The advantages of point of care have made these devices a popular option for clinics, workplaces and law enforcement. This article will describe the characteristics of the available point of care devices including the packaging format, test menu, methodology, analytical performance, cross-reactivity, quality control, result interpretation and result documentation. Platforms for measuring drugs of abuse in other specimen types will also be discussed.
