Antwerp 1773, engraving, Antwerp 1773. images of children’s snowmen before the eighteenth century are extremely rare. 6 Snow shares its malleability with clay or wax, traditional sculptors’ modelling materials that are low on the materials hierarchy. 7 And because snow is white, 8 it can allude to purity, virginity9 or fair skin, 10 but also to its direct opposite: durable, hard white marble as the classical medium of sculpture par excellence. These singular properties of snow and the meanings associated with it contributed in no small measure to the genesis and form of the snow sculpture. 11
