It has been known for many years that pituitary growth hormone (GH) preparations isolated from a variety of mammalian species exhibit multiple biological properties that are difficult to reconcile with one common mechanism of action of the hormone. Most GH preparations are not only anabolic but can be diabetogenic, producing hyperglycemia and glucose intolerance in certain species such as the dog and man and causing hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance in many species. Moreover, in GH-deficient subjects, these GH preparations produce transient insulinlike effects, including the induction of hypoglycemia, resulting from the stimulation of glucose uptake and utilization by peripheral tissues and the inhibition of lipolysis. Finally, primate GH preparations are also lactogenic, whereas those of infraprimates are not.
