The Paul B. Beeson Emerging Leaders Career Development Program (the Beeson Program) is both highly valued and nationally recognized in aging research and training. The program prepares a cadre of talented clinician-scientists for leadership in transformative research to improve healthcare outcomes. The recipients, Beeson Scholars, are early-stage clinician-scientists who have already shown signs of leadership. They use their award to advance the tools, skills, and expertise needed for continued and expanded leadership and to establish independent academic careers in aging research within their clinical discipline. To date, the program has supported 284 scholars, including 182 since the partnership with the National Institute on Aging (NIA) was established. A central component of the program is the Beeson Annual Meeting—a valuable, highly interactive forum for scientific and professional networking opportunities for current Beeson Scholars, Beeson alumni, and mentors. These meetings, which are currently supported by an NIA Conference Grant led by Dr. Yaffe and Dr. Gill, in partnership with the American Federation for Aging Research (AFAR), produce a collective “Beeson” identity and strengthen the cohesiveness of the program, as the scholars connect to colleagues who are working on similar aging-related questions, although often in different disciplines. The Beeson Program, in addition to NIA, will be celebrating a major birthday in 2024! As shown in Figure 1, the program was launched in 1994 by The John A. Hartford Foundation, Atlantic Philanthropies, The Commonwealth Fund, AFAR, and the Alliance for Aging Research, in response to an Institute of Medicine Report. 1 After 10 years, in 2004, these partners approached NIA to discuss and advocate for this innovative, high-impact career development program.
