Occasions, persons, and variables are essential referents of psychological measurement. With these as orthogonal axes in a" covariance chart," 6 basic factor-analytic research designs are possible. Pairs of referents which share the same covariance matrix are transposable. Choice among the 3 basic techniques (P, R, T) is determined by the realm of phenomena to be investigated; choice between alternatives within any one basic technique is a matter of convenience. The primary purpose of factor analysis is the discovery or confirmation of hypotheses; this purpose is common to all 6 basic designs. 38-item bibliography.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
