No information appears to have been published in the literature on the constitution diagram of the system Zr-CO. However, the existence has been reported of zirconium oxycarbides, obtained as intermediate products in investigations of the reduction of zirconium dioxide by carbon at high temperatures [1-7]. As has been demonstrated earlier [8], the reaction of the carbide ZrCo. s9 with zirconium dioxide in a vacuum at temperatures in the range 1600-2000~ leads to the formation of a variable-composition oxycarbide through the mutual dissolution of the carbon-deficient zirconium carbide and zirconium monoxide evolved as a result of reduction. The present work was undertaken with the aim of studying the mutual solubility limits of zirconium carbide and zirconium monoxide and also of determining the boundaries of existence and some properties of single-phase zirconium oxycarbide. For this purpose, the reaction between ZrC0. 98 and ZrO2, taken in various proportions, was investigated at a temperature of 2000~ and a pressure of NI0 mm Hg. X-ray structural, chemical, and metallographie analyses were employed for evaluating the results of experiments. The method of chemical phase analysis is based on the selective dissolution of zirconium dioxide and a zirconium carbide base phase in a mixture of sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide [8]. Oxygen contents were evaluated as the difference I00-E (Zr+ Ctotal), although in some cases they were also determined by the vacuum extraction method. Table 1 shows that values obtained by these two methods are in good agreement.
