We investigated cellular chemistry using caged compounds. Combined with photoirradiation, caged compounds can control biomolecule distribution with sub-cellular spatial and sub-microsecond time resolution. We present the design principles and the photochemical properties of Bhc-caged compounds as a case study. We discuss cell biological applications, including caged neurotransmitters, second messengers, and RNA. (C) 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.
