Young unbranched tetrasporophytes of Gracilaria verrucosa established from cystocarpic plants collected from Bacoor, Cavite, Philippines were cut into three parts (apical, mid and basal) each of 10 mm for growth rate studies. They were incubated in 1-1 Erlenmeyer flasks filled with 900 ml SWM-3 and kept at 15 °C or 20 °C in 11 h light: 13 h dark and 25 °C or 30 °C in 13 h light: 11 h dark with an Illumination of 2000-2090 lux by cool white 40-W fluorescent lamps. Whole and half-fronds of tetrasporophytes used äs inocula for the second experiment were kept at an ambient temperature of 25 °C 13 :TTh. A weekly change of medium was made. After a 30-day culture period, the specific growth rate ( ) of the thallus segments expressed äs increase in length per day was determined. Maximum growth was attained at 25 °C for apical segments and 30 °C for midand basal segments. Statistical analyzes (ANOVA) show that growth is significantly different in all temperatures äs well äs between the segments. Temperature affects the growth of the segments significantly. After 21 days, the specific growth rate ( ) of the whole and half-fronds expressed äs increase in fresh weight per day was determined. Statistical analyzes (Student's t-test) indicate a highly significant difference in growth rate between free-floating half-fronds and attached half-fronds and between free-floating half-fronds and attached and free-floating whole fronds. Apical segments and half-fronds proved to be potential inocula for field cultivation and aquaculture. Seeding of inocula must commence at an appropriate temperature to enhance rapid growth, thus yielding higher production.
